Do Indians need a visa to visit Hong Kong?

Planning your trip to Hong Kong? The good news is Indians do not need a visa for a 14-day visit to Hong Kong for the purpose of tourism. 

However, Indians need to get a Pre-Arrival Registration that is valid for six months from the date of application or until the passport expires, whichever is earlier of the two. 

Those who are travelling to Hong Kong for more than 14 days for any purpose other than tourism must apply for a Hong Kong visa for Indians at its immigration department. 


Is there a Hong Kong Visa On Arrival for Indians?

No, Indian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival for Hong Kong. They must apply for a Pre-Arrival Registration online before travelling to Hong Kong.


Hong Kong Visa Types for Indians

There are different types of Hong Kong visa from India depending upon the purpose of visit. 

  • Tourist Visa (Pre-Arrival Registration) : For a stay up to 14 days per visit for the purpose of tourism and is valid for six months.
  • Business Visa : For Indians travelling to Hong Kong for business-related activities for a period of up to 14 days.
  • Dependent Visa : Those who have family members with valid work or study visa in Hong Kong can apply for a dependent visa to join them. The validity of this visa depends on your duration of stay.
  • Employment Visa : Indian citizens who have acquired a job in Hong Kong and meet the requirements can apply for an employment visa to work in Hong Kong. It is valid for two years after which it can be extended.
  • Student Visa : Indian students enrolled in a recognised educational institution in Hong Kong can apply for a student visa. The validity of a student visa depends on the duration of your course.

Hong Kong Visa Application Process for Indians

Application process for a Hong Kong visa is simple and easy. Follow the steps below to apply yours:

  • Visit the official Hong Kong Immigration website and follow the designated link for Pre-Arrival Registration form.
  • Fill out the application form with the required details including passport number and supporting documents.
  • After filling out the necessary information, the registration will be processed automatically.
  • Print the Notification Slip for Pre-arrival Registration for Indian Nationals and get it signed. Double-check the particulars as they should match with your passport information.
  • If the registration remains incomplete, Indian nationals should apply for an entry visa at the immigration department and these applications should be directly submitted there. 


Documents Required for Hong Kong visa from India

Here is a complete list of documents required for a Hong Kong visa from India:

  • Indian passport valid for at least six months from the date of travel
  • Confirmed return/onward tickets from Hong Kong
  • Proof of sufficient financials to fund your stay 
  • Occupation details including employment sector and name of the employer
  • Purpose of visit, duration of stay and proof of accommodation during stay
  • Travel insurance
  • Visa application form if not applying for Pre-Arrival Registration attach with a recent photograph
  • Proof of proposed business including invitation letter from local company, in case visiting for business purposes
  • Proof of invitation or offer letter from an employer in Hong Kong, in case of employment visa
  • Proof of offer letter from recognised institution, in case of student visa
  • Proof of relationship with local sponsor for family visits or dependent visa


Hong Kong Visa Fee from India

The Pre-Arrival Registration is free of charge for Indian Nationals given that they do not extend their stay for more than 14 days. 

The other visa fee depends on the type of visa you are applying for. 

Ordinary visa (for stay more than 14 days): 230 HKD or around 2,476 INR

Transit visa: 120 HKD 1,292 INR

Extension of limit of stay: 230 HKD or 2,476 INR


Processing Time for Hong Kong Visa

The Pre-Arrival Registration automatically generates the Notification Slip required for entry in Hong Kong once you complete the registration process.

For other types of visa, the processing time may vary accordingly.

For visit more than 14 days: 4 weeks

For work visa (business or employment): 4-6 weeks

For student visa: 4-6 weeks

For transit visa: 4 weeks

For dependent visa: 4-6 weeks


Things to remember while applying your Hong Kong visa from India

There are certain things one must be careful about while applying for their Hong Kong visa from India.

  • Pre-arrival registration is not required by Indian Nationals who have direct transit by air and are not leaving the airport area.
  • The details on the pre-arrival registration should be exactly the same as your linked passport.
  • In case of renewal of passport or information, one must re-apply for the pre-arrival registration with fresh details.
  • Indian Nationals can only apply for new pre-arrival registration once the existing registration has expired.
  • In case the Notification Slip is lost or damaged or not printed on a sheet of blank A4 white paper as per the guidelines, the registrant can reprint it through the ‘View/Print Registration Notification Slip’ link of the online service on their own.
  • The details mentioned in the application should be true and correct. If the information turns out to be false, the registration will be rendered invalid and the registrant will be refused transportation as well as entry to Hong Kong.
